Hagar’s Journey of Faith

Hagar’s tale is one of hardship, resilience, and divine revelation. As the Egyptian maidservant to Sarai, Hagar found herself at the crossroads of destiny when she bore Abram a son, Ishmael. This brought about tension, leading Sarai to treat her harshly, causing Hagar to flee into the desert.

In the barren wilderness, pregnant and alone, Hagar surely felt the weight of desolation. It’s in these moments of deep vulnerability that we can imagine Hagar seeking solace in words akin to the Aaronic blessing: “May the Lord bless me and keep me; may He make His face shine upon me.”

Not only was she given hope and assurance about her future, but she also received a divine promise about her unborn son. Heartened, Hagar named the place “Beer-lahai-roi” which means “Well of the Living One Who Sees Me.”
