The Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur

is considered the holiest day of the year in the Jewish calendar. It occurs ten days after Rosh Hashanah and is a solemn day of repentance and intercession. It’s a time to seek forgiveness for sins and to make right with both God and people. For believers in Yeshua, Yom Kippur foreshadows the final judgement.

Preparation Timeline:

1. A few weeks before the Feast:

  • This day is traditionally marked by a fast, which means abstaining from food and drink for 24 hours. Begin preparing your body and mind for the fast.
  • Plan to read scriptures and prayers focused on repentance and forgiveness.

2. A few days before the Feast:

  • Prepare a light, healthy meal for breaking the fast at the end of Yom Kippur. The meal should be something easy on the stomach. Avoid overly spicy or rich foods.

3. Day before the Feast:

  • Eat a balanced and hydrating meal before starting your fast.

During the Day of Atonement:

Yom Kippur is a day of solemn rest. No work should be done. Begin the day with a time of prayer and confession. Reflect on the past year and ask for God’s forgiveness for any sins committed. Use this time to also forgive those who have wronged you.

Traditionally, the fast is broken after nightfall on Yom Kippur. A light meal is typically served.
